All ALC subspecies have a spotted coat and its color ranges from light brown to reddish and gray. The spots range from dark solid to rosette type and are aligned horizontally. Their white belly is marked with dark spots.
They are about the size of a domestic cat with a narrow muzzle and small head. They have four longitudinal black bands that run from the forehead to the neck and two white strips situated in the internal corner of their eyes. Their ears are small or medium in size, with rounded tips. The tail is thick spotted at the base and ringed toward the tip. The back legs are distinctively larger that the front ones.
Their habitat is diverse. From forests and rainforest, to mountains and semi-desert regions, specially near water. They are accomplished swimmers. They also urinate and defecate in water to mask their traces. Their main source of food are small mammals, birds, fish, insects and reptiles.
