Brown Spotted Bengal

Spotted is the most common pattern on Bengal cats. The spots can have a diversity of shapes. Rosettes are the dark outlining of the Bengal markings situated around another rich color forming the spots. Rosettes that show two different colors and shapes such as arrowhead, clustered, paw print, and doughnut or half-doughnut are preferred to single spots.

The shape of these spots show a minor hint of arrow head.

This picture depicts two-tone rosettes with an arrowhead shape.

Rosettes

In this Bengal, the shape of the spots have the appearance of rosettes.

The Bengal spots should be arranged randomly in a horizontal fashion avoiding lining up in vertical strips. Mackerel and rib bands are formed by spots aligned vertically and touching each other creating a strip effect. This disposition is accepted in pet quality Bengal cats, however, there have been some champions that had a small degree of mackerel markings..

The genetics of the spots in Bengal involves a dominant gene,  All animals (including human beings) inherit two copies of each gene responsible for their phenotype (appearance). If the  Bengal cat inherits  two copies  that are at odds with each other, and if the appearance is determined entirely by one of those genes, that gene is said to be dominant.

According to the Bengal standard spots should be aligned horizontally or they can be arranged randomly. Rosettes  showing two different colors are  more desirable than single spots.  Rosettes can  have  a doughnut or half-doughnut shape, they can  be paw print or arrowhead shaped. The standard also specifies  that the contrast  of rosettes or spots with  the background color should be extreme. A dorsal strip composed ideally of spots  should run the length of the body.  The belly must be spotted.

Kesari has a spotted dorsal stripe. Her spots run beyond the base of her tail.

In this picture we can appreciate the nice contrast between our queen Kesari’s background and beautiful dark outlined paw-print rosettes.
